Two elevated snipers fired shots at Dallas police officers during protests against the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. During the shooting, twelve police officers and two civilians were shot. Of the officers shot, five have been pronounced dead and at least seven have been wounded.

One of the officers killed was not an active officer of the Dallas Police Department; however, he was a Dallas Area Rapid Transport (DART) officer. Brent Thompson, 43, is the officer who, so far, is one of the only deceased DART officers identified.

DART sent out a tweet that confirmed Thompson’s identity and revealed that he joined in 2009. The tweet also mentioned that Thompson was the first ever DART officer to be killed in the line of duty.

DART Police Chief James Spiller told CNN that Thompson had gotten married only two weeks before the attack. Before joining DART, Thompson worked as an international police liaison for DynCorp in Iraq.

Three other DART officers were shot during the attack but remain in the hospital and are expected to make a recovery. Misty McBride, 32, Omar Cannon, 44, and Jesus Retana, 39, are the injured DART officers.

A second deceased officer has been recently identified as Patrick Zamarripa. Family members of Zamarripa posted on social media, confirming his death. Zamarripa has a daughter with his girlfriend, Kristy.

Also, Shetamia Taylor, 37, has been identified as one of the two civilians shot during the attack. Taylor took her children to the protests in order to teach them about the effects of peaceful protests. When the shots were fired, she shielded her children from the bullets and was shot in the leg. Afterward, one of her sons was covered in her blood due to the severity of her injury.
