Six-Year-Old Girl Handcuffed And Arrested In Florida For Throwing A Tantrum

The child’s grandmother is outraged.

A six-year-old in Orlando, Florida was reportedly arrested after she threw a tantrum at Lucious and Emma Nixon Elementary Charter School.

The young girl’s grandmother, Meralyn Kirkland, is outraged that her granddaughter Kaia was taken to a juvenile detention center by a school resource officer. According to WFLA, a school employee reportedly grabbed Kaia’s wrists, which caused her to lash out and kick her legs. She was then handcuffed and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center in Orlando on a battery charge.

Kirkland, in disbelief, said Kaia has a sleeping disorder which causes her to sometimes act erratically. According to her, the officers didn’t believe her.

“She has a medical condition that we are working on getting resolved and he says, ‘What medical condition, she has a sleep disorder, sleep apnea?’ And he says, ‘Well, I have sleep apnea and I don’t behave like that.’”

Upon arrival at the detention center, Kirkland says her granddaughter was fingerprinted and even had a mugshot taken.

“They told us we had to wait a few minutes because Kaia was being fingerprinted, and when she said fingerprinted it hit me like a ton of bricks,” Kirkland described. “No six-year-old child should be able to tell somebody that they had handcuffs on them and they were riding in the back of a police car and taken to a juvenile center to be fingerprinted.”

While Kaia has returned home, Kirkland says she’s required to report to court on October 16, and if she doesn’t, a warrant will be issued for her arrest.
