Legendary rapper MF DOOM died at the age of 49.

The one-of-a-kind rapper’s wife, Jasmine, confirmed the news on the rapper’s Instagram account. Rolling Stone confirmed the news with his rep, Richie Abbott.

Though the death has just been announced, MF DOOM, whose real name was Daniel Dumile, reportedly died on Oct. 31. His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Jasmine’s post honouring the rapper thanked him for being “the greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for.”

“Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family. Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off.”

Born in London in 1971 and relocating to Long Island, NY as a child, Dumile found early success as a teenager when he rapped with his brother in the group KMD. Their 1991 debut album Mr. Hood is widely considered a hip-hop classic.

After his brother’s death in 1993, Dumile became a recluse for years, eventually emerging as a masked emcee named MF DOOM and released his debut project, Operation: Doomsday. That, along with Madvilliany, a collaborative project with producer Madlib released under the name Madvillain, would go on to become cult classics and solidify him as one of hip-hop’s most creative and innovative lyricists.
