Mixtape Review: Ray J, Unkut 2

Singer offers more controversy than hits on latest effort.

In recent years Ray J has become emblematic of social commentary on the current state of "Celebrity." Despite not releasing any official music (aside from 2013 tabloid sensation "I Hit It First") in more than five years, the former R&B star is probably more famous now than ever before thanks to his public exploits, his show For The Love Of Ray J and of course the sex tape seen round the world.
With the July 29 release of his latest mixtape Unkut 2 the younger brother of songstress Brandy Norwood is looking to reallocate his fame back to the music side, yet in doing so made headlines once again for his Kim Kardashian-assisted sex tape thanks to the introductory track "Should Never Did That."
The opening track sees a part proud, part regretful Ray J revealing some of his more scandalous encounters and narcissistic regrets. One of which was making the infamous tape.
"Got drunk in the club, shouldn’t have did that s**t./  I can't even explain why I do that s**t/ I’m f***ed up in the head, I shouldn’t have did that s**t/ I got drunk in the club and yeah I f***ed that b***h/ and you found her in the house on the couch butt naked," lamented Ray J.
If he did in fact regret those particular actions you wouldn’t know from Unkut 2 as the 33-year-old singer referenced what seemed like said sex tape on multiple songs including the party song, “Wishlist" in which he name-checked his controversial "I Hit It First" single, followed by the line "When we having sex she look at me in my eye." Then on the "Pimpin’ All Over the World"-esque song "Euros" he once made reference to girls gaining fame off of sleeping with him.
"Rollin' in that big body Benz, Maybach seats, alligator skin./ B*****s gettin’ f***ed and gettin’ famous/ I guess I done started a new trend. We’re going out to dinner tonight and/Ten girls at the table. I feed her bottles of Ace, then I kick her some knowledge on how to go get some dollars/ how to get a new place and still graduate from college," sang Ray J.
Unkut 2 featured inconsistent production with songs like the Too $hort-assisted "I Love My B*****s" and the Detail-produced "Drank Money" serving as the mixtape's high notes while "I F****d Yo Girl" (possible Kim K. reference number 4) and "S Class Summer" only reinforced the vapid lyrical content that made up most of the mixtape.
Ray J keeps the tape topically basic, mostly boasting of his social and sexual exploits. Unkut 2 got a decent boost from the guest stars such as the aforementioned Too $hort as well as Bobby Brackins ("Rari"), rising star Snow Tha Product and Payso B ("Work"). Ray also incoroporated shout outs he's received from hip hop heavyweights over the years including Rick Ross, Common, Nas and Lil Wayne.
With such a high profile in the world of reality television Ray J’s star continues to rise, but Unkut 2 shows that there is still a lot of rust to be worked off to get back to where he was a decade ago. This time around it was too much autotune and not enough depth.
