Q-Tip Gives Iggy Azalea a Hip Hop History Lesson

Rap veteran schools “Fancy” rapper in a series of tweets.

Iggy Azalea has gotten a lesson in Hip Hop 101 from the professor emeritus himself, Q-Tip. The Australian rapper has come under fire recently for misappropriating Black culture without showing concern for the problems that plague the Black community. But rather than jump on the bandwagon of hate, Q-Tip took to Twitter to give Iggy a vital history in the origins of hip hop.
Over the course of forty tweets, Tip explained to Iggy — and the internet at large — that hip hop started in the '70s as a by-product of the civil rights movement and post-Vietnam War disenfranchisement. He went on to say it is an essential form of expression for the Black community still reeling from the pain of slavery, Jim Crow and modern racism.
"hiphop is fun it's vile it's dance it's traditional it's light hearted but 1 thing it can never detach itself from is being a SOCIO-Political movement," he wrote. "did u know that remnants of slavery exist today thru white privilege? When certain 'niceties' r extended your way because of how u look? Isn't that crazy? I say this 2 say u are a hiphop artist who has the right 2 express herself however she wishes."
He adds, "this is not a chastisement this is not admonishment at ALL this is just one artist reaching to another hoping to spark insight into the field you r in. I say this in the spirit of a hopeful healthy dialogue that maybe one day we can continue."
