According to Joe Budden, 50 Cent Killed New York Rap

He didn't mean it in the way you may be thinking.

Things got real on the latest episode of  “Everyday Struggle,” as Joe Budden, Maino , and DJ Akademiks debated about which regions dominated the hip-hop culture throughout the years. During the lengthy discussion, the boys got stuck on the topic of New York and the city’s reign over the genre. And Budden dropped a huge bomb on the group, claiming 50 Cent killed the New York wave. It sounds pretty harsh, but his statement wasn’t as negative as it seems.

“In my brain, me and 50 are the end of New York. After that,  it was the South,” Budden said during the show.  “50, when his record came out, he became the number one act. I’m blaming 50 and Ebro. Both of them in combination killed it.”

Budden had his reasons for the claim though. He alleged that 50 “killed NYC” not because of his sound or talent, but because of his star power.  “When you are the number one artist, you have leverage that others are not afforded,” he explained. “So I 100 percent think that 50 leveraged his power with the program director at Hot 97 and said, 'if you start playing A , B,C, and D records, you will never get a 50 Cent record.'  And guess what? If you never get another 50 Cent record, that shuts down Interscope… Can Hot 97 afford that? No.”  While it seems unfair, it may be easy for anyone to understand why Fif would want to increase his radio time and celebrity.

50 Cent has not responded to Budden’s recent comments, but that’s probably because he’s prepping for the premiere of his new show 50 Central. The new series is a late-night comedy-sketch show that sort of mimics the format of In Living Color50 Central premieres Sept. 27, on BET at 10:30pm.
