Apple Says It's Not Shutting Down Beats Music

Tech giant denies new report and is “fully committed to offering the subscription service."

Despite reports to the contrary, Beats Music will not be shuttered, according to the Hollywood Reporter. A Tech Crunch story from Monday (Sept. 22) cites five sources claiming that the music subscription service is no more, and that engineers have been reassigned to other Apple projects, like iTunes.

Reps for Apple and Beats denied the report while another source maintains that the tech giant is “fully committed to offering the subscription service though changes to any existing products are always a possibility.”

An insider later told Tech Crunch that Apple is looking to “modify [Beats Music] over time, and one of those changes could involve changing the Beats Music brand.”

Regardless of the unconfirmed sources and conflicting information, Beats has quite obviously been put on the back burner what with Apple’s newly unveiled iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus. The music service, which features curated playlists, was barely mentioned during Apple’s iPhone presentation last week, and Beats Music has not been preloaded to the smart phones, or the forthcoming Apple Watch.

Apple picked up Beats Music in May as part of a $3 billion Beats by Dre acquisition, giving founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine executive positions with the company.
