Jay Z's Tidal Is Making a Major Donation to the Black Lives Matter Movement

The streaming service is also helping other civil rights groups.

Jay Z's Tidal has been the topic of headlines since its introduction, and now it's back in the news for a noble reason. It was recently announced via Mic.com that the music streaming service is set to donate $1.5 million to the Black Lives Matter organizations and other civil rights groups.

All of the proceeds made from the October 2015 Tidal X concert at the Barclay's Center — featuring the likes of Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Usher, and Lil' Wayne — funded this generous venture.

According to Mic, the news was planned to coincide with what would be the 21st birthday of slain teen Trayvon Martin, who was shot to death on February 26, 2012 by George Zimmerman.

Tidal's grants will be distributed by The New World Founation to Black Lives Matter and other activism-focused organizations including New York: Million Hoodies, Hands Up United, NY Justice League, the Oscar Grant Foundation, and the Trayvon Martin Foundation.

Jay Z is no stranger to making donations to charitable causes on the low. It was reported that he and his wife Beyoncé anonymously donated tens of thousands of dollars to bail out protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore. The power couple has also quietly supported the Black Lives Matter movement by showing up at events and meeting with the families of the victims brutalized by the police.
