Jay-Z Called SZA A Fluke And She Agreed
TDE songstress SZA might have released one of the biggests R&B albums of the year, but her journey to success came with great uncertainty. Known widely for dishing on her personal insecurities, the “Love Galore” singer revealed that one of the biggest artists in music shared her apprehension.
During an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, SZA reflected on a crazy encounter with Jay-Z. “Jay-Z was the first person to tell me that he thought I was a fluke, to my face. I laughed and said, ‘So do I.’”
While most people would’ve been offended by Hov’s critique, SZA claims he used the word ‘fluke’ as a term of endearment, surprised by her consistently dope work.
Giving the blow-by-blow of their exchange she explained, “He was just like, ‘You’re really good, you’re pretty good,’ and I was like, ‘Thanks.” She continued, “He said, ‘I thought you were a fluke,’ and I was like, ‘Me too!’”
With Hov’s stamp of approval in tow, SZA’s debut album Ctrl hit the Billboard charts at number 3.
