NYPD Investigates Bomb Scare at Jay Z's 40/40 Club

Hoax brings authorities Jay Z's flagship sports bar, suspicious item determined not to be an explosive.

Jay Z’s first 40/40 Club was the site of a bomb scare Tuesday (Oct. 21), reports the New York Daily News. Surveillance footage from outside the location captured a male carrying a contraption originally believed to be an explosive.

The man dropped the device, which was two pieces of wood held together by wires, at a phone booth outside the New York City hot spot at around 3 a.m., and then walked away. Police weren’t called to the location until 7 a.m. that morning.

A counter-terrorism bomb squad determined that the item was not an explosive. The scare was said to be a hoax meant to strike fear in passersby, and not directed at the 40/40 club.

Hov’s flagship sports bar opened in 2003. It was shut down in 2012 for health code violations, and reopened after a multi-million dollar renovation.
