Beyoncé made the whole world stop when she debuted her most daring and transparent album to date, Lemonade, back in 2016. But apparently the BeyHive was nearly inches away from never hearing the project at all. In a new interview with The New York Times, Jay-Z revealed that the two actually had plans to do a joint album before Bey pulled the plug and came out with her solo album.

In the long-winded conversation with NYT’s executive editor Dean Baquet, Hov disclosed that he and Beyoncé had nearly completed a project that would delve into their now-very public marital issues. “We were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together,” he explained. “And then the music she was making at that time was further along. So her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on.”

As far as the decision to go in a different direction, Jay suggested it made more sense considering how much of the project had already been created. “There was never a point where it was like, ‘I’m making this album.’ I was right there the entire time,” he continued. “It just felt like, she should go first and share her truths with the world.”

Following Lemonade's  release, Jay-Z released his 13th studio album, 4:44, in June 2017. Despite singles like “Family Feud” and “4:44,” which referenced certain issues in his marriage and personal life, Jay says he never thought of his project as a response to his wife’s record.

While the world might have been blessed with two amazing albums, it’s a shame we never got to hear what Jay and Bey could have made as a unit. Check out the full interview with The New York Times here.
