Here We Go Again! Disney Accused of Whitewashing Another Movie

The studio claps back.

Fans of Disney's original 1998 film Mulan were excited to learn that the story was set to be brought to life as the latest live action project to hit the screen. However, the House of Mouse seemed to stir up some controversy once again as leaked information showed that they were planning on taking a more Caucasian approach with the story's plot.

In an anonymous post, an industry insider who claimed to have read the script revealed that it featured a "30-something European trader" who falls in love with a teenage Mulan. This newfound twist axes the infamous Chinese character Li Shang, who was Mulan's love interest in the original film.

In addition to being Mulan's new white lover, the insider says, according to the new script, the new lead is taking his privilege to new heights by taking credit for defeating one of the most well-known villains in the movie.

This new plot has OG Mulan fans upset, as she is known for being one of the female figures within the Disney franchise who famously didn't need the help of a man to fight her battles.

After receiving major backlash, a source close to the movie has revealed that, in fact, the love interest will remain a Chinese man, after all.

"The spec script was a jumping-off point for a new take on the story that draws from both the literary ballad of Mulan and Disney's 1998 animated film," the source told Vulture. "Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese."

Regardless, fans have taken to Twitter to air their concerns:
