Heartbreaking: Jada Pinkett-Smith Bursts Into Tears Talking About Her Parents’ Abusive Relationship

She admits she's worried about falling into similar patterns.

Jada Pinkett-Smith's Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk, with her two co-hosts — her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones; and daughter, Willow Smith — has proven to be an outlet for the trio regarding their life struggles and triumphs.

Most recently, Banfield-Jones opened up about her abusive relationships with the actress' late father, Robsol Pinkett Jr., and, in the process, Pinkett-Smith revealed what she did when she found herself falling into her father's abusive ways.

At the beginning of the episode, Banfield-Jones revealed that Pinkett Jr., who died in 2010, physically abused her and was usually in a drunken rage during those moments.

"He gave me a black eye once, and I tried to hide it from Mommy, but she saw it," she admitted to her daughter and granddaughter. "His addiction — he just wasn't rational. I feel like, once again, I'm trying to make excuses for him, and I think that's what women do. But, whatever the reasons were, you have to — at the end of the day — you have to protect yourself."

During her mother's explanation, the Girls Trip star revealed that she grew afraid that she was becoming a violent drunk like her father, so she only saw one solution: "I had to stop drinking."

While speaking about her late father, she broke into tears, describing him as a "gentle soul."

"It's not easy to hear that your parents experienced that together," she said as her mother added that she wished he was still alive to share his side of the story.

"Now that I'm older, I have so much more compassion in knowing what he had gone through," she continued. "You know? 'Cause I was pretty harsh on him."
