Jill Scott Defends Bill Cosby in the Midst of Rape Allegations
Support for comedy legend Bill Cosby has been rare lately, but R&B/soul singer Jill Scott is choosing to stand by him fully, even swiftly defending him in the process.
The "Golden" singer got into it with a few of her Twitter followers about whether or not folks are jumping the gun in judging Cosby. When some of her followers attacked her for defending the television icon, Scott said in a series of tweets, "U know Bill Cosby? I do child and this is insane. Proof. Period... I've learned not to believe too much without proof. Especially about someone [who's] done so much for our greater good."
When asked why she chooses to publicly advocate for Cosby, Scott said, "I'm respecting a man who has done more for the image of Brown people than almost anyone EVER. From Fat Albert to the Huxtables."
Not wanting anyone to misconstrue her defensive comments for ones of rape tolerance, the singer went on to say, "We will respectfully have to agree to disagree... Rape is a despicable, cowardly crime. If you've been raped, plz do NOT shower, go to the police IMMEDIATELY, have a [rape] kit done. GET EVIDENCE."
Earlier this year, Bill Cosby presented Jill Scott with an honorary doctorate degree from Temple University where he recently resigned after serving on the board of trustees for 32 years.
