As industry insiders are freaking out about the dismal summer box office this year (ticket sales are down 24% from last year), the news isn't all bad. A couple of films have managed to stand out among the underperformers, including Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The visual effects-laden film held on to its No. 1 spot at the weekend box office for the second week in a row with $36 million. The film was also helped by stellar reviews in advance of its release.

Coming in at No. 2 was The Purge: Anarchy, with $28.3 million in its first week at the box office. Animated family film Planes: Fire & Rescue took third place, bringing in $18 million in its debut week.
Landing at number four was Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel‘s Sex Tape, which was a flat-out bomb in its opening weekend with only $15 million in ticket sales. That's about half the take of the duo's last film together, 2011's Bad Teacher. Rounding out the top five was Transformers: Age of Extinction, which earned $10 million and boasted another success story: first film of the summer to cross $1 billion in worldwide box office.

Next week, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Hercules goes head-to-head with Scarlett Johannsen's Lucy for the box office crown. Will either be able to knock Apes down the chart?
