VH1 Cancels Sorority Sisters , BET Will Not Air Remaining Episodes

Reality series about Black Greek life sparked boycott.

VH1 has canceled its controversial reality series Sorority Sisters, and BET will not air the remaining three episodes as some news outlets are reporting.
The reality show, which was supposed to follow the everyday lives of sorority girls from four different iconic African-American sororities and the trials they face, instead turned into an extravaganza of ratchet reality TV that many say casts both the Black university experience and Black Greek life in a negative light.
VH1 has not issued a statement or officially confirmed the show's cancellation, as is the network's custom, but rumors that unaired episodes will appear on BET are patently false.
Sorority Sisters sparked a boycott movement to have the show banned even before it premiered. Several sponsors pulled their ads from VH1 as a result, which many speculate is the reason the network pulled the show from the air.

The petition to stop the series from airing, which went up last June, reads, “Stop the spread of ignorance and stereotyping of our beloved Black Greek letter organizations. Our founders amongst EVERY organization worked extremely hard to allow us to unite and flourish not only on college campuses, but as a people well beyond our college days, and [show creator] Mona Scott-Young now threatens to demolish those aims and goals we all abide by. If this show airs, we will boycott any and all advertisers affiliated with the show through commercial advertising, product placement and/or location use.”
Hallmark and Carmex are two brands who pulled their advertising from the show, and filmmaker Ava DuVernay asked that no commercials for her Oscar-nominated civil rights drama Selma air during the series.
Two of the shows cast members have already been suspended from their sororities, seemingly over their involvement with the series.
