Find Out Which Stars Will Help Eliminate #OscarsSoWhite

The Academy just made a major push for diversity.

Following the recent #OscarsSoWhite uproar, the Academy has received major flack for its lack of minority representation. Now, it seems they have taken measures to fix this shortcoming as they have invited a record 683 new members, with members of the new class being 46 percent female, and 41 percent people of color.

According to Variety, some of Hollywood's most celebrated minority stars (race and gender) have been invited, including Idris Elba, John Boyega, Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, Morris Chestnut, Vivica A. Fox, O'Shea "Ice Cube" Jackson, Regina King, Nia Long, Michelle Rodriguez, Gabrielle Union, Marlon Wayans and America Ferrera.

Yahoo! reports that the Academy's 17 branches compiles a list of new members, and those chosen must be sponsored by two members of the branch they will be invited to join. The only prerequisite is that a candidate must have "demonstrated exceptional achievement in the field of theatrical motion pictures."

Furthermore, actors must have a minimum of three theatrical features and directors must have a minimum of two directorial credits.

With the new class included, the Academy membership now comprises of 27 percent female and 11 percent people of color. Prior to the changes, it was just 25 percent female and eight percent people of color, marking a two percent increase in female members and three percent increase in people of color, overall.

"We're proud to welcome these new members to the Academy, and know they view this as an opportunity and not just an invitation, a mission and not just a membership," said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Academy president, in a statement.

The new class marks the largest ever announced in the Academy's history.
