‘American Idol’ Contestant Explains Why She ‘Chose to Be Heterosexual’

La'Porsha Renae appeared on "The Real" to set the record straight.

American Idol season 15 runner-up La'Porsha Renae has been in hot water recently thanks to two tweets in which she announced she was choosing to no longer be homosexual, and instead live a heterosexual lifestyle.

Members of the LGBTQ community, and fans alike, worried that Renae was saying that people can choose who they love, which has long been a homophobic argument for why homosexuality is wrong. Amidst the anger, Renae decided to join the ladies of The Real to set the record straight.

Co-host Loni Love spoke with Renae, saying that the way the two tweets were framed left many angry, saying, "Now people took that as you saying that..."

Quickly, Renae finished the thought. "Everybody gets to choose," she said. "When people ask me a personal question I answer it in a personal way. I can only speak from the footsteps and the shoes that I've walked in."

Renae went on, "We have so many variations that make us who we are and the reason I even went towards homosexuality at first was because I was raped, I was molested, I was abused, I saw a lot of people around me going through the same thing with men so I told myself, 'I'm not going to be with a man, I'm going to be with a woman.'"

She then addressed what led her to given heterosexuality another chance, saying, "And then I found my spirituality, I found a belief system that worked for me, and I said, 'You know what I actually do want to give being with men another chance.' I didn't want those experiences to define any experience that I would have that's bad with a man, so I chose to go. But that's me. I never said that anybody gets to choose, I never spoke for anybody by myself."

This is not the first time Renae has been in hot water regarding statements about the LGBTQ community, but her explanation and apology does seem to come from the heart.

There is nothing wrong with Renae being open about her own sexuality, but in the future she should certainly make it clear that she is speaking from a personal standpoint, and not trying to give out advice.
