Larry Wilmore on Child Discipline: Bring Back the '70s

Nightly Show host thinks parenting has gone awry these days.

Larry Wilmore's topic on The Nightly Show last night was child discipline and how out of hand it has gotten in the past few decades. "Who's raising our kids?" Wilmore wanted to know.
After running through a slew of stories about parents being arrested for relatively innocuous parenting choices, like allowing kids to skip church and letting them walk home from the local park alone, Wilmore asserted, "All of these stories remind me that parenting has changed over the years. I'm not sure that it's changed for the good."

Wilmore called upon a grainy clip from his fake '70s-era talk show Soul Daddy, "one of the hippest shows on UHF," to see what the parenting norms were in the decades past.
"As a dad, I think the most important thing you can tell your kid is 'shut the f**k up,'" an afro-ed Wilmore said. "I acknowledge this might be a jive-turkey issue," he continued. "You throw a book at the back of a kid's head, that's gonna get their attention."
"After it's gotten their attention, they can read the damn book," Groovy Wilmore said. "Dig that."
