Amandla Stenberg Creates Comic Book to Empower Black Girls

She teamed up with Stranger Comics for NIOBE: She Is Life.

Is there anything Amandla Stenberg can't do? The Hunger Games actress is proving herself to be the most badass young star of her generation through her talent, intelligence and activism.
Stenberg — who already made a name for herself calling out cultural appropriation whenever she sees it — noticed that there aren't enough images of strong Black girls in the media, so she decided to create one herself.

BLACK SUPERHEROES IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

The recent high school graduate has teamed up with Stranger Comics to create a new series called NIOBE: She Is Life, which features a young Black protagonist named Niobe, described as an “orphaned wild elf teenager and would-be savior of the vast and volatile fantasy world of Asunda. She is running from a past where the Devil himself would see her damned… toward an epic future that patiently waits for her to bind nations against the hordes of hell.”
In a statement to Huffington Post, Stenberg explained her connection to the character, saying she strongly identifies with Niobe and her journey toward self-discovery.
“I was drawn to give voice to Niobe and co-write her story because her journey is my journey,” she said. “I connect to her mixed racial background and quest to discover her innate powers and strengths, to learn who she truly is. There’s never been a character quite like her, one who shatters the traditional ideal of what a hero is. We need more badass girls!”
Fun fact: "Niobe" is also the name of the character Jada Pinkett Smith played in The Matrix sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Coincidence or homage to her buddy Jaden Smith's mama?

NIOBE: She Is Life is due out November 4.
