‘Surviving R. Kelly’ Producer Dream Hampton Checks Dave Chappelle For Lying About Her During His Comedy Special

She shares her side of the story.

Dave Chappelle has his fans laughing once again with his latest Netflix stand-up special, Sticks & Stones. However, one of his jokes is getting a response.

While tackling controversial contemporary subjects like Kevin Hart not hosting the Academy Awards and Louis C.K.’s sexual assault allegations, among others, the Yellow Springs, Ohio, resident weighed in on the docuseries Surviving R. Kelly. According to Chappelle, the series’ director, Dream Hampton, contacted him and asked if he’d be a part of the Lifetime project.

"Dream’s promoting the s**t and she keeps bringing me up,” said Chappelle. “‘Nah, b***h, I’m cool,” he said, then followed up with how he believed it came about. “I asked Dave Chappelle to be in my documentary, and he said it was ‘too hot for TV.’ B***h, I did not say that. That does not even sound like how I talk.”

Now Hampton is responding to the notion that she wanted Dave Chappelle involved in the series and says that’s not exactly how things went down.

“Quick fact check: I didn't personally (or casually) invite Chappelle to be interviewed for the doc. The producer responsible for celeb outreach officially asked him, more than once. I haven't seen or talked to him in about 8 years. Weird he told his joke that way,” she tweeted.

“I also, obviously, didn't need Chapelle to talk about R. Kelly personally. I wanted him to talk about the two pieces of cultural criticism he produced about R. Kelly for the Chappelle show,” Hampton continued. “I also have never in my life said the words "too hot for tv", because, B***h, that's not how I sound.”

Surviving R. Kelly premiered on January 3. The six-part documentary chronicles Kelly’s alleged sexual abuse of women, prompting charges of child pornography, racketeering, kidnapping and more from both local and federal authorities.
