Tiffany Haddish's rise to fame may seem to have occurred overnight, but her journey was one that was in the making for years, as she explained in her new memoir The Last Black Unicorn.

In addition to her career woes and obstacles she faced during her rise to the top, Haddish touched on several personal hardships she experienced in her life, specifically related to her childhood in the foster care system and even suffering a miscarriage while in an abusive relationship.

In an excerpt from the book obtained by E!, the Girls Trip breakout star expounded on the multiple moments her foster father molested her when she was just 13. She recalled him offering to suck on her breasts to help them grow after he caught her stuffing toilet paper into her training bra. The actress said, being naiive and ignorant to the truth at the time, she began allowing him to do it every day for 15 minutes before she left for school. 

"In my mind, ‘molested’ meant somebody hurt you in some kind of way. Like, they took something from you that you didn’t want to give," she said. "And what the old man did never hurt. It didn’t necessarily feel good, either, it was just whatever. And he never tried nothing else with me, not even once. It was just like — in my mind — he was helping me out."

While she didn't initially know the extent of the violation, she said that when she was 19, her eyes were opened to the truth when she confided in a friend about what was happening and she explained to her that she was, in fact, being molested.

The actress also touched on her former marriage in the book, admitting to marrying and divorcing the same man twice. She explained that their relationship was so dysfunctional that he would get violent towards her at times. On one particular occasion, she recalled, he became enraged that she was speaking to another male comedian after a gig and proceeded to physically assault her before a crowd of people.

"He grabbed me by the collar, he was like, ‘It’s time to go to the room now,’ in front of everybody. Just snatched me by my shirt, and pulled me to the elevator and threw me in it," she said. "Once we got to our hotel room, he was so quick. He snatched me by the neck and slammed me into the wall."

She also revealed that she suffered a miscarriage as a result of one of his violent attacks. When it occurred, she didn't even know she was pregnant.

We love a good story of overcoming adversity and Tiffany Haddish is a true testament of that sentiment.
