The Cosby Show Producer: I Hope Fans Still Watch
With all that's currently going on involving Bill Cosby, several networks have decided to pull his programming from their rosters. Tom Werner, a producer for the iconic family sitcom, said that he hopes viewers would think for themselves and separate the show's fictional father-figure, Heathcliff Huxtable, from the public figure of Cosby.
While he declined to comment specifically on the rape allegeations involving Cosby, Werner did speak intensely with the Hollywood Reporter about the show's success and cultural significance.
"The legacy of the show is obviously very important to me beacuse the show was a groundbreaking show and it protrayed a middle-class African-American family in a very positive way," he said. "I'm hoping that people will still be able to watch the show and identify with the Huxtables."
Werner has chosen to remain diffident throughout the Cosby scandal and has even issued a joint statement with his producing partner Marcy Carsey last November where he called the accusations against the iconic TV dad "beyond our knowledge or comprehension." A total of 46 women have since come forward with rape accusations, inclining several cable networks to halt reruns of The Cosby Show.
