Kevin Hart Explains Why He Would Never Play a Gay Role

Actor says he turned down Tropic Thunder role for being too "flagrant."

Kevin Hart will do a lot of things for his career, but playing gay is not one of them. The Real Husbands of Hollywood star, whose movie The Wedding Ringer was released on Friday and who hosted Saturday Night Live this past weekend, said in a radio interview that he would not portray a gay character on the screen.
"I can't," he told Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club. "Not because I have any ill will or disrespect. It's because I don't think I'm really going to dive into that role 100 percent because of insecurities about myself trying to play that part. Does that make sense?"
"What I think people are going to think is going to stop me from playing that part the way I'm supposed to," he continued.
Hart also admitted that he turned down the role of Alpa Chino in 2008's Tropic Thunder, which ultimately went to Brandon T. Jackson, for being too "flagrant."
"The dude, he was doing a lot of stuff in the draft that I read," Hart said. "It was real flagrant. I was like, 'I can't do this.'"
The comedy heavyweight made sure to make it clear that he didn't have any problem with the LGBT community, adding, "As people, I love you."
