Did Ride Along 2 Take the Force Out of Star Wars?
Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ four-week run at the top of the box office has finally come to an end — thanks to Kevin Hart and Ice Cube.
Ride Along 2 took first place over Martin Luther King weekend, debuting with $41.6 million from Friday through Monday. The sequel to the 2014 hit managed to dethrone The Force Awakens, which placed third and only pulled in $32.6 million over four days.
Second place went to The Revenant, which took in $39 million over the long weekend. The film was bolstered by its Golden Globes wins and 12 Oscar nominations, more than any other movie.
Fourth place went to Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, which made $19.7 million through Monday. Starring John Krasinski, 13 Hours follows six former military operators during the 2012 terrorist attack on an American diplomatic compound in Libya.
The Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell comedy, Daddy’s Home, rounded out the top five, earning an estimated $12 million.
Next week, sci-fi thriller The 5th Wave and comedy Dirty Grandpa will enter the mix and try to pry first place away from Ride Along 2.
