Fury Wins Top Spot; Dear White People a Box Office Hit

The Brad Pitt war drama unseats Gone Girl.

Brad Pitt declared war at the box office; the Nazi Germany–themed action drama Fury came in at number one and racked up $23.7 million. Written and directed by David Ayer (Training Day), the film, also executive produced by Pitt, marks the third straight #1 release for Sony Pictures this fall. The previous two hits are Idris Elba’s vehicle No Good Deed and Denzel Washington's The Equalizer.

The
Ben Affleck thriller Gone Girl drops to the second spot, with $17.8 million, after enjoying a two-week reign. The animated Book of Life debuts this week at number three. The family film, which features the voices of Zoe Saldana and Ice Cube, brought in a solid $17 million.

Rounding out the top five, Alexander and Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day brought in a respectable $12 million, while the notable indie The Best of Me tallied up $10.2 million.

In specialty box office news, the other big story this weekend was the super success story of Justin Simien’s Dear White People. Released in only 11 theaters, the satirical racial dramedy grossed an impressive $344,136. Audiences of smartly written Black comedies can expect this great news to only grow: Dear White People expands to 350 theaters on Oct. 24.
