Box Office: Hotel Transylvania Rocks, Stonewall Flops

The controversial gay rights drama fails to find an audience.

Hotel Transylvania 2 beat The Intern for the top spot at this weekend’s box office with a whopping $47.5 million debut.
The sequel to the animated flick, starring Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez and Kevin James, did better than its predecessor, claiming its record for the top September opening of all time.
Coming in second place was The Intern, starring Robert De Niro as Anne Hathaway's entry-level employee, which opened to a solid $18.2 million thanks in large part to female audiences. Taking the third spot was Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, earning an additional $14 million, for a domestic total of $51.7 million so far.
Rounding out the top five were the star-studded adventure drama Everest and Johnny Depp‘s awards contender Black Mass, bringing in $13.1 million and $11.5 million, respectively.
Stonewall, Roland Emmerich's passion project about the riots that sparked the modern LGBT rights movement, suffered both a critical beating and tragically slow ticket sales. The film, which has been accused of whitewashing Stonewall's history, grossed only $112,414 over the weekend.
