Like Whoa: Academy Making Epic Changes to Increase Diversity

Older folks are going to be really, really mad.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced a new plan to avoid #OscarsSoWhite happening again — and it's going to make some people very, very mad.
The organization plans to double the number of women and minority members in the next five years and will make room for them by pushing some older members into "emeritus" status and taking away their voting privileges. That means, in a nutshell, if you haven't actively worked in the industry in the past ten years, no more free screeners for you.
The move is meant to prevent the — let's face it — old, out-of-touch white folks from tipping the scales in favor of the actors and films they feel comfortable with and concentrating the voting power in the hands of those who are actually out there making movies.
The changes also involve “an ambitious, global campaign to identify and recruit qualified new members who represent greater diversity,” according to an Academy press release issued on Friday. In addition, three new seats will be added to the AMPAS Board of Governors. As of now, the current Academy president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, is the only African-American on the 51-member board.
“The Academy is going to lead and not wait for the industry to catch up,” said Isaacs. “These new measures regarding governance and voting will have an immediate impact and begin the process of significantly changing our membership composition.”
Interesting that it took a huge public outcry to get the ball moving on this, but we won't complain.
