Omari Hardwick Opens Up About Mentoring Kyrie Irving

Plus, other members of the 'Power' cast dish on what to expect in season 3.

Aside from celebrating the start of the third season of his smash hit series Power, Omari Hardwick has even more to celebrate as his mentee Kyrie Irving played a hand in sealing the Cavaliers' championship win over the Warriors. Speaking with BET.com, he told us about what it's like being the mentor to one of the greatest young athletes out today.

"I text him, and I don't want to give too much of our relationship away, but I said, 'We need to celebrate,' and he said, 'Oh, we're going to celebrate, just me and you, man. So differently,' and he said, 'I love you, brother,' and I said I love him," he said.

The Power leading man said the key to his seamless connection with athletes is his close relationship with the sport himself.

"One of the greatest things for me is the platform that God gave me by using my talent as an actor and as a poet but as an athlete where these athletes watch but not [the] inability to put their finger on what they're watching [and] why they connect with me," he said. "So that's the thing with me being a former athlete in the way I attack characters and attack poetry is from the base of being an athlete... So many athletes who have been close to me have been everything to me. Kyrie and I will have our power moment."

Definitely a beautiful thing. Also in the interview, we asked Omari and his cast mate Lela Loren if they think America can survive a president Trump and their responses were abundantly clear.

"I got in trouble for saying I would move my family to Europe, but I said it," Omari said, before Lela delved into why she saw his platform as inherently problematic.

Speaking directly on what to expect from the action-packed season three of Power, Joseph Sikora, who plays Tommy, said this: "Season two leveled the playing field so anything that comes now is actually going to have to be a rebirth. A new growth."
