Soap Actress Attempts to Hate on Viola Davis and Gets Dragged
In your daily dose of "why you mad?," while the entire world continues to praise Viola Davis for her historic win at last night's Primetime Emmys, General Hospital actress Nancy Lee Grahn is letting everyone know that she isn't a fan. The disgruntled former soap star took to Twitter to vent, essentially saying that Davis' incredibly moving speech was a bunch of nonesense.
Following the announcement of her win for Oustanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in How to Get Away With Murder, Davis gave a speech that received a standing ovation. "The only thing that separates women of color from everyone else is opportunity," she said. "You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. So here's to all the writers, the awesome people — people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be Black."
Grahn, 57, then took another jab at Davis' speech, saying that, though she is talented, she has not been discriminated against as a Black actress in Hollywood.
Then there was her criticism of Davis' decision to highlight Black women in Hollywood. Grahn felt like "every woman," regardless of race, should have been included in the picture that Davis, a Black woman, was trying to paint.
Following her arrogant words, Grahn was quickly labeled "entitled" as she chose to criticize a historic moment that was decades in the making for a group that was disenfranchised for years. After the backlash, she took to — you guessed it — Twitter, to apologize for her words.
Meanwhile, Viola Davis and Black Hollywood continues to revel in the classic moment that was made last night. Congratulations again, Mrs. Davis!
