The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies topped the box office for the second week in a row, with $54.5 million stuffed in its stocking for the four-day holiday weekend. The Middle Earth epic has taken in nearly $170 million domestically.
Coming in second was the Angelina Jolie's war film Unbroken, which far exceeded expectations with a $47.3 million gross. Disney’s film adaptation of the musical Into the Woods, starring Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp and more, followed close behind with $46.1 million.
Rounding out the top five were Ben Stiller‘s Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and Annie, starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, which brought in $27.9 million and $21.2 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, the highly controversial Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy, The Interview, placed 16th, opening to an estimated $2.8 million from 331 theaters for the four-day weekend. The film made history online, however, scoring $15 million in digital download sales.

Next week, A Most Violent Year wraps up the 2014 new releases with a limited run for awards consideration. The new year will kick off with Kevin Hart's The Wedding Ringer, Jennifer Lopez's The Boy Next Door and many other offerings.
