Brittney Griner Files to Annul Marriage

Phoenix Mercury star says she was "pressured" to wed now-pregnant Glory Johnson.

After just 28 days of marriage, WNBA superstar Brittney Griner has officially filed papers to annul her union to her pregnant wife Glory Johnson.

The news comes six weeks after the couple got into a physical altercation at their Arizona home. Both 24-year-olds were taken into custody for domestic violence, and both said that their dispute was mutual combat. However, Griner pled guilty later on to disorderly conduct and was ordered by a judge to complete 26 weeks of a domestic violence counseling program. Johnson's case is still pending.

Now, Griner has lashed back in the ultimate way by filing to annul their marriage. In an official statement to People, she explained the details of her decision. "Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage," she said. "I can confirm today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake."

The Phoenix Mercury center said that her marriage to Johnson was all based on "fraud and duress" as she was "pressured into marriage under duress by [Johnson's] threatening statements." While she does not specify the nature of the threats, it seems to be related to the pregnancy as she claims she has no biological connection to the baby that Johnson is carrying.

While Johnson has not yet responded to Griner's claims, her sports marketing agent, D.J. Fisher, told TMZ, "Glory was unaware of the filing and still loves and cares for Brittney. Glory loves Brittney and made a huge sacrifice to carry a child, put her career on hold to invest in their relationship and their future. As a result, she won't be playing this season."

Both Griner and Johnson were arrested and suspended from the league following their altercation.
