Watch: Nia Long Is Better Than Ever In The Trailer For The New Roxanne Shanté Biopic, ‘Roxanne Roxanne’

The #BlackExcellence in this film is through the roof.

Hip-hop pioneer Roxanne Shanté is set to showcase her rise to fame in the dramatized story about her life in the Netflix original movie and biopic Roxanne Roxanne.

The film, which features some of Hollywood's leading names, like Nia Long and Mahershala Ali as well as newcomer Chanté Adams, will show the struggles and triumphs of the femcee's early life.

Adams makes her debut performance as Shanté in the film, with Long portraying her mother, Ms. Peggy Gooden, and Ali playing her abusive boyfriend, Cross.

The movie will go on to show Shanté's history as the only lady of Marley Marl's Juice Crew and the first woman, ever, to have a rap record.

Hip-hop heads will also recall that the then 14-year-old recorded "Roxanne's Revenge" in one take after learning that the rap crew U.T.F.O. took shots at her on record after she refused to give them any play. Needless to say, she bodied them. It was this moment that fast-tracked her rise to stardom, pushing her to become the first lady of hip-hop.

The film is written and directed by Michael Larnell and produced by Pharrell Williams and Forest Whitaker.
