Jaden Smith Joins Baz Luhrmann's Drama About Hip Hop Origins

Actor will play a brilliant graffiti writer in the musical.

Jaden Smith – Twitter poet, philosopher and part-time superhero – is going back to his original profession, acting, for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Netflix musical drama, The Get Down
Smith will play Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling, a “psychedelically talented and enigmatic graffiti writer” raised in the Bronx, according to producers.
“Recently, Jaden has been seeking diverse and challenging roles and this is a testament to his passion to grow in the craft,” Luhrmann said in a statement. “In the short time he has joined our acting family, he has begun developing his The Get Down skill set, even taking lessons from the legedendary graffiti artist Lady Pink of Wild Style fame, as well as steeping himself in the history and culture of the Bronx.”
Smith joins Jimmy Smits and Dope's Shamiek Moore, among a host of other talented actors, for the 13-episode series. Though Smith has a number of films under his belt, from the sleeper hit The Karate Kid to the universal flop After Earth, this will be his first foray into television.
The Get Down, which takes place in the 1970s, will debut on Netflix in 2016. Watch a young Mr. Smith interview his famous dad Will Smith on 106 & Park below:
