Aaron Dean, The Cop Who Killed Atataina Jefferson, Has Been Arrested And Charged With Murder [UPDATE]

The Fort Worth police officer was taken into custody late Monday.

Fort Worth police officer Aaron York Dean has been charged with murder after killing Atatiana Jefferson in her own home on Saturday (Oct. 12.) The 35-year-old was arrested and booked the evening of Monday, October 14.

NBC News reports that, according to jail records, Dean is being held at the Tarrant County Correction Center.

In a press conference earlier today, Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus revealed how Dean resigned from the department only hours before he could terminate his employment.

Kraus stated how Dean, who was with the Fort-Worth Police Department for 18 months, was initially placed on administrative leave after the fatal weekend shooting. NBC News reports he has not been cooperative with authorities, refusing to answer the department’s questions.

James Smith, Jefferson’s neighbor on the 1200 block of East Allen Avenue, called the non-emergency number requesting a welfare check after noticing her front door had been left open since late Friday evening.

Police officer’s body cam footage shows Dean approaching the home before flashing a light into Jefferson’s window. Immediately after shouting to Jefferson, "Put your hands up — show me your hands," he shot Jefferson once, not even a full second later, according to the Washington Post. The ordeal was captured on the cop’s body camera.

According to NBC News, the 28-year-old pharmaceutical sales rep was babysitting her 8-year-old nephew at the time of the shooting. The young boy was playing video games in Jefferson’s bedroom when she was struck.

Dean was a member of the Fort Worth Police Department since April 2018.

The ex-officer may also face civil rights sanctions.
