Zoë Kravitz on Her Famous Family: 'We Are the Nerdiest People'

The actress talks to Complex about Lisa, Lenny and her inner demons.

Zoë Kravitz has been an object of public fascination for years — who wouldn't be curious to see how the child of a rock star and a preternaturally cool sitcom icon would turn out? — but 2015 seems to be the year that she will blow up into a star in her own right. The actress and musician (she fronts the band Lolawolf) has a string of films slated for release this year, from last month's Divergent to a reboot of Mad Max to indie darlings The Road Within and Dope. In the midst of all this attention, Kravitz sat down with Complex to get surprisingly real about her famous family and her inner demons.

“When I was younger,” says the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, “I really wanted to prove to people I was a normal human being, that I was cool, chill. When kids were mean, the first thing they’d say is, ‘She thinks she’s so f***ing cool because her dad is famous.'” She admits that having her dad pick her up from school "in a sports car and a netted shirt" didn't help matters.
Still, she insists that her upbringing was grounded and that her family isn't what it seems to be. “I don’t think anyone knows how funny we are,” she says. “It’s like this whole thing where people think we’re so cool and hippie and wear velvet, but we’re the f***ing nerdiest people.”
Kravitz also shares the dark side of growing up famous: in her case, suffering from eating disorders that started in high school and haunt her to this day. “I think it was part of being a woman, and being surrounded by [fame],” she explains. “My mother’s a...beautiful woman, and I think, in some way, I felt intimidated by that sometimes. My dad dated a lot of supermodels,” she says.
