Michelle Rodriguez: Casting Diverse Superheroes Is 'So Stupid'

Actress says people of color should "stop stealing" white roles.

Michelle Rodriguez has her own take on diversity in Hollywood, and like a lot of what the outspoken actress has to say, it's not exactly what people want to hear. Rodriguez, best known for her roles in Avatar and the Fast and the Furious franchise, says that the recent trend of casting people of color as superheroes traditionally perceived as white is "so stupid."
After TMZ jokingly asked the Puerto Rican star if she’d be starring as The Green Lantern, she fired back with: “Stop stealing all the white people’s superheroes. Make up your own. What’s up with that?”

Rodriguez's comment comes as we are finally seeing more diversity in the superhero realm. Michael B. Jordan will star in Fantastic Four as the Human Torch this summer, Chadwick Boseman recently inked a multipicture deal with Marvel and comedian Donald Glover has long been touted as a contender for a Black Spider-Man.
Recognizing the backlash her remarks provoked, Rodriguez later posted a sort-of apology video on her Facebook page, admitting that she has "a tendency to speak without a filter," and clarifying that "there are many cultures in Hollywood that are not white, and they should explore their own mythology...It's time to stop taking what's already there and trying to fit a culture into it."
Surprisingly, Rodriguez doesn't have much to say about the frequent habit of white culture misappropriating Black culture.
