Mother Furious After Her Daughter's Hair Was Set On Fire By A Classmate And The Teacher Did Nothing

Judy Holland says her child "could have been put up in flames."

A Detroit mother was outraged after she learned her 7-year-old daughter had her hair set on fire while at school and was told to sit down by a school worker when she tried to report the incident.

"She could have been put up in flames," Judy Holland told WXYZ about her daughter’s incident.

According to Holland, her daughter, Mikaela, was waiting in the school lunch line at Noble Elementary School when a boy set her hair on fire with a lighter, then blew out the flame.

While at daycare, a worker noticed Mikaela’s hair had been scorched and broken off. According to Holland, Mikaela's 5-year-old sister, who is in kindergarten at the same school, witnessed the young boy light her sister’s hair on fire.

Holland says when the girls went to a school worker to see if they could call their mother, they were told to sit down for lunch.

When questioned about the alleged incident, a spokesperson for the Detroit Public Schools Community District said they have not found any evidence of what’s been described, yet they are continuing to investigate and will examine surveillance video.

Although the school hasn’t verified the claims, Holland says she questioned other children at the school who identified the boy responsible.

Holland fears what might have happened if she put gel or some kind of hair product in her daughter's hair.

"My baby could have third degree burns right now," said Holland. "I don't want this to happen to any other kid."
