Casting News: Projects for Tessa Thompson, Viola Davis

Dear White People star will join Michael B. Jordan in Creed.

The world of superheroes continues to get more diverse. According to sources, Viola Davis has been tapped for the role of Prison Warden Amanda Waller in the upcoming Suicide Squad. In the comics, Waller is a former congressional aide and government agent often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former supervillains working in return for amnesty.
Davis's role in the film is contingent on her TV schedule on How to Get Away With Murder. If it works out, she will be joining Jared Leto as the Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot and more in the franchise.
According to sources, Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer were reportedly contenders for the role.
Tessa Thompson's career is heating up after her stand-out role in Dear White People. The actress, who recently won the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Actor, will star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler's Creed, a spinoff of the Rocky franchise. The Fruitvale Station director has also tapped Sylvester Stallone to reprise his role as Rocky Balboa for the project. Thompson will next be seen in Ava DuVernay's awards season favorite Selma.
