De La Soul Raises Over 600K in Kickstarter for New Album
The people have spoken. A month after hip hop pioneers De La Soul announced they were funding their first studio LP in 11 years on Kickstarter, the project has collected some $600,874 to date.
Those six figures makes the trio's campaign the second most-funded music venture on the site, behind smartwatch Pebble Time, which is the platform's most-backed idea ever, and Amanda Palmer in the music category. Palmer's art book, album and tour raised over one million dollars.
Among the perks for big number donors: one $10,000 backer will get a platinum autographed record of their 1989 album 3 Feet High and Rising. A $7,500 backer will spend a day in the studio with the trio and record a skit on the album. And a $5,000 pledger will get to dine with De La and hang out backstage at a show. The majority of the funding, however, comes from fans of more modest means: 1,410 of the 11,000-plus people who pledged will get a vinyl version of the LP.
"Thank you so much to all of you," the group wrote to fans via their Updates.
The as-yet-untitled album is scheduled to come out in September of this year.
