Trump Grants Alice Johnson Clemency After Meeting With Kim K And People Are Cautiously Optimistic

"Sadly, Trump is still working to make sure there will be more Alice Johnson's in the future."

President Donald Trump granted clemency on Wednesday to Alice Marie Johnson, who was serving a life sentence without parole for a first-time nonviolent drug offense.

The 63-year-old great-grandmother, who served 22 years of her sentence, was thrust in the spotlight after Mic heavily discussed her story and Kim Kardashian West became an advocate for her release.

Johnson will be released from a federal prison in Aliceville, Alabama, where she has been since 1996.

"Ms. Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades. Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates," the White House said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

"While this Administration will always be very tough on crime, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance," the statement added.

The president pardoned Johnson a week after meeting with Kardashian West in the Oval Office to discuss the case.

Kardashian West first became involved in Johnson’s case after seeing a Mic Opinion video on the story in October.

“I saw your video,” Kardashian West told Mic. “If you think about a decision that you’ve made in your life and you get life without the possibility of parole for your first-time nonviolent offense, there’s just something so wrong with that.”

Johnson, who recently celebrating her 63rd birthday, is expected to be released soon.

Although everyone is thrilled Johnson will be released from prison, they wonder if Trump — whose DOJ is trying to crack down even harder on non-violent drug offenders — will re-examine the mass incarceration of Black people.
