Hit-Boy Talks Sacrifice and Giving Back to His Father

The rapper/producer details how being an outcast motivated him to build his new label, HS87.

Hit-Boy is no stranger to being the mastermind behind the hit songs of your favorite stars, but he's recently stepped into new territory as the head of his own label, HS87. From friends to his father, the rapper-producer has made the label a home for musical misfits.
"HS87, I feel like that label is for kids like me. We're all like the rejects, we're all the kids that nobody wanted to f--k with and they called 'wack' and whatever. We're just coming together and making the best s--t we can, and it's flourishing and it's winning,” he told BET.com.

Besides making good music that hits hard and is progressive, Hit-Boy also started the label to offer guidance to a pack of fresh talent.

"I wanna do it different than how I came up. Like I said, I wanted a mentor, someone who could show me and teach me the ins and outs. I didn't really get that. I had to learn on my own."

And it's not just close friends that are in the HS87 camp. An unlikely member is the producer's father, Big Hit, who can be heard rapping on We the Plug's lead single, "Grindin' My Whole Life." On the song, Hit-Boy raps about wishing that his dad had been around when he was growing up and his father responds by rapping, "I got boxed up in 9-1." Now, with his dad out of the pen, it's part of Hit-Boy's mission to give his dad a better life.

"I'm changing my dad's life right now. My dad don’t know how to be nothing but a gangster. He don't know how to be nothing, so I'm giving him a whole different outlet because I was able to go out in the world and take the bulls--t, and bust my a-- and take 18 hour flights two days in a row so I could just go produce, so I could just be in a room, not even guaranteed nothing," says Hit-Boy. "I sacrificed a lot to be here and I'm just blessed to be in this position right now."

As for the music that the artist/producer and HS87 plans on giving to the world, he simply said that he has to do what speaks to him and helps his team progress.
