Listen: CMPD Release Dispatch Audio From Moments Before Keith Lamont Scott Was Fatally Shot

Officers in the recording stated they saw a weapon.

After releasing an incomplete video from a Charlotte officer's body camera, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has released a radio dispatch of the moments preceding the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott.

After Scott's death, family members contested the notion that he was armed. Instead, they claimed that he held a book in his hands. This inspired large eruptions of protests in Charlotte. During the protests, the public demanded that the police department release the tapes of shooting. Subsequently, a grainy image and partial video recording was released.

Now, the CMPD has released radio audio from the involved officers. The recording seemingly backs up the timeline of events originally put forward by the department.

While police were looking for another suspect, they came across Scott in his car with marijuana and a weapon, officials said. The radio audio that the department released appears to corroborate the timeline.

“Roll back to this apartment complex behind you. There was a guy parked next to us rolling a joint and had a gun,” an officer is heard saying on the radio at 3:47 p.m. The officer later clarified that they left and returned to the scene by saying, “We’re back here at the other visitor parking.”

The officers then suited up in bulletproof vests before approaching Scott. Shots were fired at 3:52 p.m. and shots were reported fired moments later.

Although police attempted to release all evidence to remain transparent, protests and public suspicion surrounding Scott's death continue.
