Where's MMG When You Need Them?
Meek Mill is not even close to winning this beef with Drake after what happened last night at OVO Fest. If you weren’t reading tweets online or searching for a Periscope stream, here’s a quick rundown.
Drizzy wore a “Free Meek Mill” tee backstage during rehearsal. Minutes into his performance, he opened with “Charged Up” and “Back to Back.” He performed in front of countless memes gathered from the Internet that pretty much hang Meek out to dry. Later on that night, he rapped a snippet of his rumored third diss track, “3Peat,” which contains the lyrics, “Dealing with these n****s, man, it takes a lot / Been saying f**k a chaser, when we taking shots / Look man, I said you don’t want that threepeat.” A bunch of “F**k Meek Mill!” chants also rang throughout the night.
And after the set, Drake was with Kanye West and Will Smith backstage laughing at memes and clowning the Philly rapper. Was it the nail in the coffin? Very likely.
With all the jabs Meek has endured these past two weeks, where has MMG been to support him?
With the exception of Rick Ross (who questionably tweeted “Drake >>>>>> Meek” but later made it up with this), there hasn’t been word from Meek’s Untouchable Empire labelmates. Wale, Stalley, Omarion, Gunplay, Rockie Fresh, Torch, Fat Trel, Tracy T, Yowda and French Montana have all stayed quiet on social media. A quick glance at their Twitter timelines and Instagram feeds reveal that none of them have sided with Meek in his time of need. Are they afraid of losing their connection with Drake? Is the 6 God really that powerful? That's up for debate.
Actually, Gunplay did talk about Meek versus Drake — briefly. During his promotional run for his long-awaited Def Jam debut, Living Legend, he sat down with ItsTheReal for an engaging (and hilarious) convo over a sea bass dinner and gave his two cents about Meek calling out Drake for having a ghostwriter. Here's a snippet from their A Waste of Time podcast:
“It’s just Meek Mill is very talented himself, OK? He writes his own rhymes. He’s a lyricist. He’s a rapper’s rapper, so I can feel where he’s coming from. If I heard Jay Z, like he said, didn’t write his rhymes, I’d be hurt too. I’m not mad at his rant. I’m not mad at him speaking his mind 'cause that’s what we do. That’s what I do. I speak my mind, I don’t give a f**k.”
Then, he gives a hypothetical situation:
“If I was in a Meek Mill position of greatness as such, I would kick it with my fine a** wife and I wouldn’t worry about who ain’t writing what. I wouldn’t care. It wouldn’t matter to me because I’m getting mines. I would never worry about what another man's doing. Never have, never will.”
Mind you, this interview was published before Meek’s “Wanna Know.” Still, ‘Play’s thoughts on the feud make a lot of sense. It’s probably why the whole crew is keeping their distance. There’s no reason for a roster who boasts talents like Wale and Omarion to go after Drake. At the same time, there’s strength in numbers and a united front is always better than standing alone. Let’s be real: who wouldn’t want to see an MMG posse cut directed at Drizzy and OVO?
After last night, the dust is starting to settle on Drake versus Meek Mill. Drake got his W. Meek can go back to dating the baddest girl in the game, Nicki Minaj, and enjoying tour life together. He can still celebrate that Dreams Worth More Than Money is close to selling 300,000 copies in total.
There’s really no point on carrying it on further. Unless, MMG steps in and finishes it off.
