A New Statement Says Tidal's Royalty Payouts Are More Than Spotify's

The amount is more than doubled from what the leaked data claims.

An unnamed independent label leaked data last week to Digital Music News that revealed Tidal’s per stream royalty payout was higher than Spotify's with an average of $0.144 or 1.44 cents.

Now, in a new official statement from a Tidal representative given to various outlets (including BET.com), the streaming service claims the report is false. They claim that they pay almost three times as much per stream than their direct competitor. "This is not one of Tidal’s royalty statements. For the same period (March 2015) as this purported ‘leaked’ statement, Tidal paid an average royalty per stream of $0.024-0.028, or double the royalty shown in the statement."

In actuality, Tidal’s royalties are double what was originally stated. Spotify uses an average per stream payout to copyright holders of between “between $0.006 and $0.0084," according to their comprehensive breakdown for artists. In the same statement that leaked, Spotify’s per stream royalty averaged $0.0048 or $0.48 cents per stream.

Despite Tidal’s negative press lately, Jay Z (oops, we mean Jaÿ-Z) is pushing forward with exclusive content and a promotional concert that’ll feature him performing deep cuts and B-sides. Let’s just hope its none of these
