Virginia School Admin on Leave after Racial Tweet

Booker T. Washington High School Assistant Principal Amy Strickland said she never thought the image to be racist.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Virginia high school administrator is on leave after acknowledging that she retweeted an image that prompted a group of students to walk out of class in protest.

Booker T. Washington High School Assistant Principal Amy Strickland responded Thursday to the uproar over a June post that had appeared on the "OrNahhTweets" social media page. The image showed seven couples in prom clothing, the boys black, the girls white, with the caption, "Every white girl's father's worst nightmare Or Nah?"

Strickland told WAVY-TV that said she forwarded the tweet to her daughter and never interpreted it as racist. Strickland said both of her daughters went to prom with black dates.

Media outlets report that Norfolk Public Schools is reviewing the matter and the NAACP is conducting an investigation.
