Ava DuVernay to Be Honored With Her Own Barbie Doll
The days of scouring your local Toys “R” Us for the semi-tanned Barbie doll are over. Award-winning director Ava DuVernay will be honored with her own Barbie doll as part of Barbie's new “Sheroes” Collection. And even better, this new Barbie from Mattel does more than shop; she’s Oscar-nominated!
The doll, outfitted with DuVernay’s signature locs, a black sweater, gray flannel pants and red Converse sneakers, has an uncanny resemblance to the Selma director. “Barbie has always represented that girls have choices, and this spring we are proud to honor six Sheroes who, through their trade and philanthropic efforts, are an inspiration to girls,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, General Manager of Barbie, at Variety’s Power of Women Luncheon on Friday.
The other trailblazing women set to be honored with their own dolls include actress Emmy Rossum, Lucky Editor-in-Chief Eva Chen, Emmy nominee Kristin Chenoweth, 5-year-old fashion designer Sydney Keiser and country music artist Trisha Yearwood. The dolls are set to be released just in time for National #Shero Day on April 27.
If you’re trying to get your hands on one, you’ll just have to wait, as each Shero is auctioning off their own Barbie to a charity of her choice.
