Gucci Mane Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

La Flare to serve 39 months for conviction on federal gun charge.

Gucci Mane was sentenced to three years and three months in prison Wednesday (Aug. 20) for his federal conviction on illegal possession of a firearm. An attorney for the 34-year-old rapper, born Radric Davis, asked that his client be given credit for the 11 months he's already served since his arrest last year, the Associated Press reports

U.S. District Judge Steve C. Jones will consider the request and encouraged Gucci to stay out of trouble. He was facing a maximum of 10 years behind bars. "You're still a young man, and you can still do a lot if you follow and abide by the law," Jones said, noting that his children had informed him of Gucci's rap talents.

Gucci, who is already a convicted felon, was busted with a firearm by Georgia cops last September. The arrest followed days of erratic behavior from La Flare, which included him yelling at fans in an Atlanta mall. He pleaded guilty to gun possession in May.

Lawyer Drew Findling attributes Gucci's actions to his addiction to Lean (codeine cough syrup), and asked that he serve out his sentence in a rehab facility on the West Coast. "He understands he has some work ahead of him, and his goal is to bring a resolution to this case through this sentence and to get back to something that is very important to him and his fans and that is to perform,"  said Findling, following the court hearing. Gucci was also given three years supervised release and a $5,000 fine.

Prison time hasn't stopped Gucci from working, though; it's actually made him go that much harder. He dropped three albums in the last month and wants to release eight more projects this year.
