Video Shows LAPD Fatally Shoot Homeless Man

Man was identified as "Africa" by several witnesses on Sunday night.

On Los Angeles’s skid row, which holds one of the nation's largest homeless populations, a man was fatally shot after an altercation involving police officers.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the officers, a part of LAPD's Central Division and Safer Cities Initiative, a team specifically assigned to skid row, were initially responding to a 911 call involving a possible robbery. When officers arrived at the scene, they approached the man, who they claim immediately began fighting and resisting them.

The officers attempted to subdue the suspect with a taser gun and take him into custody. During the scuffle, a few of the officers and the suspect fell to the ground. One of the officers dropped his baton, and the video shows a woman picking up the officer’s night stick. She has been arrested and may be facing charges.

The man was shot by two officers and a sergeant after repeatedly reaching for officer’s weapons. The homeless man was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is undetermined how many times the officers fired at the man, but in the video that captured the altercation at least five shots can be heard.

Two officers were also injured during the struggle, but they have since been treated and released for their injuries.

"It's always tragic when there's a loss of life in one of these situations," Commander Andrew Smith, who is overseeing the investigation of the incident, told the LA Times. "It's not an incident taken lightly by any police officer. But we are committed to everyone involved and to the public to conduct a thorough and complete investigation."
