The plot thickens in the legal battle between Robin Thicke and Marvin Gaye’s estate over “Blurred Lines.” Thicke’s lawyer claims that Gaye’s estate exploited the singer's "moment of personal vulnerability” after the family introduced audio evidence and media interviews to prove Thicke and songwriter/producer Pharrell Williams jacked Gaye’s hit.

"Robin's moment of personal vulnerability is being exploited in the hope of diverting attention from the obvious weakness of their legal claim,” Thicke’s lawyer Howard King said in an email via his publicist.

After first taking partial writing credits for his 2013 jam, Thicke recently admitted that he was high on alcohol and Vicodin during the writing process of “Blurred Lines” and for many of the interviews surrounding the song. 

In a deposition obtained on Tuesday (Sept. 16), Thicke claimed Pharrell was actually the song’s composer, stating "I was just lucky enough to be there when he wrote it." Moreover, Thicke claims he was so intoxicated that he was “quite surprised” when he read back some of the interviews.

“Every day I woke up, I'd take a Vicodin to start the day," Thicke said. "And then I'd fill up a water bottle with vodka and drink it before and during my interviews."

However, according to the Gaye estate, they did not bring Thicke’s personal issues into the case. “Mr. Thicke and his counsel did so in the attempt to avoid his prior admissions regarding “Got to Give It Up,” Gaye’s children stated in an email from their attorney.

Thicke and Williams initiated the legal woes, filing a preemptive lawsuit denying that they stole samples of Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” in August 2013. The move provoked Gaye’s children Nona Gaye, Frankie Gaye and Marvin Gaye III to countersue in October.

A jury trial is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2015.
